What is Volume in Science

Volume is the amount of space occupied  by an object. It is represented by symbol ‘v’. It is expressed in cubic unit.


Measure of the amount of space occupied by a body.
Volume indicates the total work performed.
Measure of solid content or capacity is expressed in units that are the cubes of linear units, such as cubic inches and cubic centimeters, or in units of dry and liquid measure, such as bushels, gallons, and liters.
Volumes of complicated geometric forms are often calculated using integral calculus
In fact, volume is three-dimensional space, a substance in the form of solid, liquid, gas, plasma or occupies. It often measured numerically using the SI unit, the cubic meter. The volume of a container is generally accepted as the capacity of the container. In other words, it is the amount of fluid the container could hold. Of course, three dimensional mathematical shapes are also assigned volumes. Volumes of some simple shapes like regular, straight-edged, and circular shapes can be easily calculated using arithmetic formulas.  Integral calculus is used to calculate the volumes of complicated shapes.

Moreover, one-dimensional figures such as lines and two-dimensional shapes such as squares are assigned zero volume in the three-dimensional space. The volume of a solid body irrespective of whether they are regularly or irregularly shaped can be determined by displacement of fluid. Displacement of liquid can also be used to measure the volume of a gas. The combined volume of two substances is usually greater than the volume of one of the substances.

However, sometimes one substance dissolves in the other and the combined volume is not additive. Volume in science is calculated differently for different objects. For example, the volume of a cuboid is length multiplied by width multiplied by height. Similarly, the volume of cylinder is calculated in a different manner. For calculating the volume of a sphere, a different method is applied. From all these explanations, it can be concluded that various parameters are employed in order to find the volume of an object of any shape including geometrical shapes such as cylinders, spheres, cubes etc.
